  • Both mood disorders and substance us disorders were in the top 10 most responsible diagnosis for inpatient hospitalizations in 2019-2020.
  • Over 50,000 Canadians experienced inpatient hospitalizations for mood disorders, with an average length of stay (LOS) over 14 days
  • Over 48,000 Canadians experienced inpatient hospitalizations for substance use disorders, with an average LOS of almost 6 days.

  • Mood disorders were in the top 10 most responsible diagnosis for inpatient hospitalizations in Ontario. Over 20,000 Ontarians were hospitalized, with an average LOS of over 12 days.

 

Most responsible diagnosis for inpatient hospitalizations by age, Canada

Ages 5-17

  • Age 5-17, the TOP reason for inpatient hospitalizations was “other mental health disorders”. Over 11,000 children and youth, with an average acute LOS of over 8 days. Accounts for 10.4 % of all inpatient hospitalizations.
  • The 3rd highest reason for inpatient hospitalizations were mood disorders. Almost 6500 children and youth. Average acute LOS of almost 8 days. Approximately 6 % of inpatient hospitalizations .
  • 7th highest reason for inpatient hospitalizations were anxiety disorders. Over 2200 children and youth age 5-17 inpatient hospitalizations. Average LOS of almost 7 days. Accounts for 2% of inpatient hospitalizations.
  • This means that 3 of the top ten reasons for inpatient hospitalizations for children and youth are related to mental health.
  • Mental health inpatient hospitalizations for 5-17 = 18.1% of all inpatient hospitalizations

 

Ages 18-64

  • Top reason is giving birth, 358,018 ppl, average acute LOS 2.2 days
  • Second highest reason for inpatient hospitalizations are substance use disorders. Over 42,000 hospitalizations accounting for 2.9%, with an average acute LOS of 5.4 days.
  • Third highest reason for inpatient hospitalization is schizophrenia and schizotypal and delusional disorders. Over 37,000 Canadians account for 2.5% of in person hospitalizations with an average acute LOS of 19.6 days.
  • Fourth highest reason for inpatient hospitalization is mood disorders, almost 37000, 2.5% of inpatient hospitalizations, average acute LOS of 13.5 days
  • 10th overall reason for inpatient hospitalization is other mental health disorders, over 18,000 Canadians, accounting for 1.2% of all inpatient, with an average acute LOS of 7.7 days
  • This means four of the top ten reasons for inpatient hospitalizations for adults (18-64) were related to mental health or substance use.
